A margin call is issued by a lender. When an investor receives a margin call on his or her margin account additional funds are required to keep the positions open, positions must be sold, or the positions will be liquidated by the lender. A margin call occurs when the funds deposited in a margin account are insufficient to cover the risk on the account.
