Backwardation

Backwardation is a theory that relates to a futures contract moving towards a higher value. As the contract gets closer to its expiration date that contract will be traded at a price greater than what it had earlier on. In fact there will be a minimal difference between the forward and spot prices. This comes from a higher convenience yield that is greater than the risk free rate.
